Selvage: Keep Or Toss?

Traditionally, quilters cut fabric selvage before they begin piecing a quilt together.

Selvage is the finished edge of the fabric which is constructed to prevent fraying and unraveling. It often has the defining information about the fabric printed along the edge. This includes the designer's name, color swatches, and the name of the fabric.

So, if selvage prevents fabric from fraying why do quilters cut it off? Well, I went rogue and decided to keep the selvage this time!

Years ago I received an Interactive Media Design degree which focused on typography and mixed media. Someone spent a lot of time on this selvage design for the fabric line, so I couldn't cut it off and toss it aside. Sometimes it feels good to go against the grain and not be traditional! I think this selvage brings a lot of character to these beautiful whole-cloth quilts. What do you think?
