Cub Stamps Quilt pattern

The Cub Stamps quilt is inspired by the colors of spring and sleepy (sometimes grouchy!) bears emerging from a long winter’s nap.

Painter’s Palette Solids are featured in the pattern.

Sewing History

Did you know the Bear Paw block has an extensive quilting history dating back to the early 1800s? Many theorize that the symbol was also used in the Underground Railroad to let people know that they were on the “right track” to freedom, proving to be a bold and versatile symbol!

You can read more about the Underground Railroad Quilt Code here Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage.

A modern Twist

Our modern spin on the bear paw block includes eight-at-a-time half-square triangles and easy-peasy four patch units. Do the borders look complicated? No way! This pattern includes the Seminole piecing technique, which began in the 1800s as a necessity for making clothing. The results are timeless, intricate, and elegant. The blocks and borders combined remind me of a postage stamp.

Do you see it?
